Peking Union Medical College Hospital: International Medical Services, campuses and booking channels

Published

Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH) runs a unit called International Medical Services (IMS) for international patients. The hospital's English site and Beijing's English government portal describe its campuses, languages, hours and booking channels. This page sets out what those two sources say and does not rate, rank or recommend the hospital.

What the hospital says about the unit

The hospital's English page for foreigners says IMS is dedicated to providing medical services to international patients who work, study, travel or live in China. The page also says international patients can book online on the English website, or download the bilingual PUMCH app to make an appointment, and that a 24 hr emergency service is offered.

Campuses

The hospital's English page gives two addresses:

  • Dongdan campus: No.1 Shuaifuyuan Wangfujing, Dongcheng District, Beijing
  • Xidan campus: No.41 Damucang Hutong, Xicheng District, Beijing

Beijing's English government portal lists the same two campuses. It adds that IMS provides emergency services at the Dongdan campus 24 hours a day, every day of the year. For the Xidan campus, the portal's entry says emergency services are not available.

Service languages

The portal's entry for IMS lists English, Japanese, French, Korean, Russian and German as service languages.

Clinic hours

The hospital's English page gives these working hours:

Service Hours
Daytime clinic Mon.-Fri. 8am-5pm
Nighttime clinic Mon.-Thur. 5pm-7pm
Weekend clinic Sat.-Sun. 8am-12pm
Appointment service Mon.-Fri. 8am-5pm
Emergency room 24hr ER service

Booking an outpatient appointment

The portal's entry says international patients can download the hospital's official app and make an appointment on the IMS English interface. The portal adds that Chinese friends can help by adding the patient's information to their patient list in the app and booking on the patient's behalf. The entry also says a patient can use the hospital's mini program on WeChat, found by scanning the QR code on the page or by searching for the hospital's name in WeChat.

Whether the app or mini program currently accepts an appointment was not tested for this page.

How inpatient admission is described

The hospital's English page sets out an inpatient process in four steps:

  1. The patient first sees a doctor in the outpatient clinic.
  2. If admission to a ward is needed, the doctor writes the admission order and applies for a bed.
  3. When a bed is available, the ward doctor contacts the patient one day before and says what to prepare.
  4. The patient checks into the ward at the time and address given in the doctor's message.

What the unit says it covers

The portal's entry says IMS at the Dongdan campus sets independent outpatient clinic, emergency, and more than 200 wards. It says the outpatient service covers more than 30 clinical specialties, including internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, ENT and stomatology. The same entry lists special services such as vaccination, inpatient physical examination, health management, painless endoscopy and direct billing for patients with commercial insurance.

For the Xidan campus, the portal's entry names five featured centres: Gynecological Endocrinology and Reproduction Center, Cosmetic Medicine Center, Breast Surgery Center, Stomatology Center and Health Management Center.

These are descriptions by the hospital and the portal. This page has not checked them, and it does not compare the unit with any other hospital.

Commercial insurance pages

The hospital's English page lists three items on commercial insurance: procedures for outpatients with commercial insurance (direct billing type), procedures for in-patients with commercial insurance (direct billing type), and a list of commercial health insurance companies and institutions contracted with the hospital, updated in April 2022. The contents of these items were not read for this page, so no insurer is named here.

What this page did not establish

  • Appointment availability, waiting times and fees were not checked.
  • The hospital's grade, ranking or reputation is not reported here.
  • The items on the hospital's insurance page were not opened.
  • No clinical service, outcome or doctor is assessed.
