Hospitals in Shenzhen: official counts, beds and how the figures are defined

Published

Shenzhen's official figures for hospitals come from two places that count differently: the municipal statistical bulletin and a Shenzhen Municipal Health Commission page. Both give hospital numbers for the city, and they cover different years. This page sets out each source's figures and its counting basis. It names no hospital, and it does not rate, rank or recommend any institution.

The municipal statistical bulletin

The Shenzhen 2025 national economy and social development statistical bulletin has a health paragraph. It counts 6011 medical and health institutions in the city at the end of 2025, 124 more than the year before. Of these, 171 are hospitals, which is 9 more than the year before.

On beds, the bulletin counts 92327 beds in health institutions, a rise of 16.0 percent. Of these, 86035 are hospital beds, a rise of 16.8 percent.

The bulletin counts 139474 health technical staff, a rise of 5.0 percent. Medical institutions at all levels and of all types handled 14102.09万 visits in 2025, a rise of 3.3 percent. The bulletin records 255.11万 admissions for the year and a bed occupancy rate of 80.4 percent.

The health commission's figures

The health commission's page counts 5431 medical and health institutions at the end of 2023. The page says this figure excludes 685 community health service institutions run by hospitals. The same paragraph counts 159 hospitals.

On beds, the page counts 69877 beds in the city, of which 64825 are hospital beds. It counts 152930 health workers on duty, a rise of 5.3 percent.

The page also gives figures per thousand residents, based on a resident population of 1771.08万 at the end of 2023 (万 is the Chinese unit for ten thousand), which excludes the Shenzhen-Shanwei Special Cooperation Zone. It gives 3.95 beds, 8.63 health workers, 7.11 health technical staff, 2.86 licensed (assistant) physicians and 3.07 registered nurses per thousand people.

Reading the two sources together

The two sources cover different years, so their figures are not a time series from one source. The health commission page states its basis for institutions, which leaves out hospital-run community health service institutions. The municipal bulletin does not state its basis in the paragraph read here.

Neither source names individual hospitals. This page does not compare the two sets of figures and does not say which hospitals are counted.

What this page did not establish

  • Hospital names, levels and ownership in Shenzhen were not collected.
  • The Shenzhen Municipal Health Commission's own annual health bulletin was not found, so no figure for the same year from both sources is available.
  • The commission's page was read as a web page and not as a statistical table, so the breakdown of hospitals by type is not covered.
  • No institution's licence or category was checked.
