Shanghai's statistical yearbook counts hospitals as one category among its medical and health institutions, and it also gives figures by district. It does not list hospitals by name in the tables read for this page. This page sets out what the tables count and what the city's English portal says about a hospital visit. It does not rate, rank or recommend any hospital.
Hospitals among all health institutions
The Shanghai Statistical Yearbook, in table 21.2, counts health institutions, beds and personnel by category for 2024. The yearbook table counts 6431 medical and health institutions in total, with 193868 beds and 325057 persons employed.
The hospital row of the same table shows 503 institutions, 176050 beds and 220926 persons employed. Within the hospital staff, the table gives 190001 health technical staff, 62252 licensed (assistant) physicians and 93661 registered nurses.
Other rows of the table show how the rest of the system is counted:
| Category | Institutions | Beds |
|---|---|---|
| Primary medical and health institutions | 5692 | 15751 |
| Community health service centres and stations | 1208 | 15751 |
| Specialised public health institutions | 83 | 1302 |

Visiting a local hospital: the city portal's guide
Shanghai's English government portal carries a step-by-step guide to visiting a local Chinese hospital. The guide says most hospitals have appointment booking services, through a hotline or online platforms. It describes these steps:
- On arrival, the patient registers (挂号, guahao) at the admission desk and pays an admission fee.
- The guide says the materials needed for registration include the patient's passport, and maybe a piece of paper with the name of the specific department.
- A patient who has not been to the clinic before gets a hospital card (病历卡, binglika), which is needed on future visits.
- The patient sees the doctor when the number is called. After a prescription (处方, chufang), the patient pays the fee and collects the medicine from the hospital pharmacy.
- If the doctor orders further tests, the patient pays for the examination and goes to the section where it is carried out.
- If hospitalisation or surgery is needed, the guide says the patient pays the potential costs. It also says a patient may share a ward with several other patients, and that a VIP ward with a private or semi-private room may also be available.
The portal also describes booking through an app called Suishenban (随申办). In the app, a user registers, taps "Healthcare" on the home page and selects "Make an appointment". A first-time user adds a patient and saves the personal information. After the appointment details are confirmed, the system sends a verification code to the user's mobile phone, and entering it confirms the appointment. The portal's guide was updated on 26 May 2026.
What this page did not establish
- The yearbook tables read here do not name individual hospitals, so this page lists none. Hospital names, levels and ownership in Shanghai were not collected.
- The table rows for village clinics, outpatient departments and clinics have blank cells in the yearbook page and were left out.
- The yearbook counts institutions under its own category rules, and these may differ from counts published by the health authority.
- Whether the booking app or hotline currently accepts an appointment was not tested.
