Hospitals in Chengdu and Chongqing: what the official figures count

Published

Chengdu and Chongqing report their health figures in different forms and for different periods. Chengdu's health commission publishes a monthly statistics sheet. Chongqing's figures here come from the municipal government website's report on the health commission's annual bulletin. This page sets out what each source counts, with its date, and names no hospital. It does not rate, rank or recommend any institution, and it does not compare the two cities.

Chengdu: the monthly statistics sheet

The Chengdu Municipal Health Commission's monthly sheet for December 2024 counts 13983 medical and health institutions in the city at the end of that month. In December 2023, the sheet gives 13457. Of the December 2024 total, 807 are hospitals, against 799 in December 2023.

The sheet also counts maternal and child health hospitals, community health service centres and stations, and township health centres. Rows from the sheet's table:

Institution type Count
Maternal and child health hospitals 22
Community health service centres and stations 270
Township health centres 134

On beds, the sheet gives 179253 beds in place across all institutions in December 2024, of which 148655 are in hospitals. It counts 239254 health technical staff, including 91158 licensed (assistant) physicians and 112176 registered nurses.

For services, the sheet reports 20081.53万 visits to medical institutions in 2024, of which 11114.23万 were at hospitals. The unit 万 is the Chinese unit for ten thousand. It reports 630.50万 discharges, of which 504.81万 were from hospitals. The bed occupancy rate was 84.52 percent for all institutions and 84.88 percent for hospitals.

Chongqing: the report on the health bulletin

A report on the Chongqing Municipal People's Government website says the municipal health commission issued the 2025 Chongqing health development statistical bulletin. The report counts 23854 medical and health institutions in the city at the end of 2025.

Within that total, the report counts 810 hospitals. It says 115 of them are tertiary hospitals and 252 are secondary hospitals. It gives 22806 as the number of primary medical and health institutions. The report says clinics and infirmaries grew faster.

On beds, the report gives 21.26万 beds in medical and health institutions in 2025, which is 6.67 beds per thousand residents.

The report says total visits to medical and health institutions rose from 19363.28万 in 2021 to 22824.5万 in 2025. It records 791.1万 discharges in 2025. The bed occupancy rate for 2025 was 81.96 percent.

Reading the two cities' figures

The two sources differ in kind and date. Chengdu's source is a monthly sheet. Chongqing's is a government website's report on an annual bulletin. Because the sources differ, this page does not set one city's counts against the other's.

What this page did not establish

  • The text of Chongqing's bulletin was not read. Only the municipal government website's report on it was.
  • Hospital names, levels and ownership in both cities were not collected, and no hospital is named.
  • Counting bases may differ between the cities and between sources, and were not reconciled.
