Hospitals in Beijing: official counts, hospital levels and foreign-language services

Published

Beijing's health authority counts 782 hospitals in its statistical bulletin for 2025. The bulletin sorts them by ownership, by level and by bed numbers, and it does not name them. The city's English portal separately lists the institutions that offer services in foreign languages. This page sets out both sets of facts and does not rate, rank or recommend any hospital.

How many hospitals the bulletin counts

The Beijing Municipal Health Commission's 2025 health development statistical bulletin counts 11994 medical and health institutions in the city. Of these, 782 are hospitals, 10885 are primary medical and health institutions and 83 are specialised public health institutions.

A footnote to the bulletin's table says that institution and staff counts include 14 military hospitals stationed in Beijing. Of those 14 hospitals, 13 are tertiary and 1 is secondary.

Ownership, level and size

The bulletin splits the hospitals three ways.

Split Counts
Ownership 215 public hospitals and 567 private hospitals
Level 142 tertiary hospitals, 182 secondary hospitals, 402 primary hospitals and 56 hospitals with no level assigned
Size, local hospitals only 542 hospitals with fewer than 100 beds, 64 with 100 to 199 beds, 81 with 200 to 499 beds, 31 with 500 to 799 beds and 50 with 800 or more beds

The size split covers 768 local hospitals. The bulletin's own wording for the private group is 民营医院 (non-public hospitals).

The level labels are the tiers of the Chinese health system. Our guide to hospital grades in China explains how levels and grades differ.

Beds

The 2025 bulletin gives bed numbers for all medical and health institutions in Beijing. The city has 156901 planned beds and 144106 beds actually in place. Hospitals account for 143653 of the planned beds and 136658 of the beds in place.

Community health centres and village clinics

The bulletin counts 2123 community health service centres and stations in Beijing for 2025. Of these, 377 are centres and 1746 are stations. It also counts 2419 village clinics.

How much hospitals are used

For 2024, the bulletin records 30166.1万 outpatient and emergency visits to medical institutions in Beijing in 2024, where 万 means ten thousand. Hospitals account for 18318.0万 of these visits, or 60.7 percent. The same bulletin records 545.1万 discharges across all medical institutions, of which hospitals account for 533.0万.

Institutions with foreign-language services

Beijing's English government portal carries a Medical Guide for Foreigners. It lists major medical institutions that provide full-process foreign language services in Beijing:

  • International Medical Services (IMS) of Peking Union Medical College Hospital
  • International Department of China-Japan Friendship Hospital
  • International Medical Center of Beijing Friendship Hospital
  • International Medical Center of Beijing Tiantan Hospital

The guide also points to an appendix of other medical institutions providing full-process foreign language services. The list on this page is the portal's list, in the portal's order. It is not a ranking, and it does not say which institution suits which patient.

Emergency calls, appointments and payment

The portal says that 120 is the emergency number across the Chinese mainland, and that in Beijing a caller can dial 120 to request pre-hospital emergency medical services.

For outpatient appointments, the portal points to the International Service Beijing (京通) healthcare service of the Beijing 114 appointment and registration platform. It is a mini program on WeChat and Alipay, with an English version selected by clicking "En".

On payment, the portal lists RMB cash, credit cards from several networks, Union Pay debit cards and WeChat Pay or Alipay. It says the charge standard for international patients is the same as for Chinese residents. It also says that patients with high-end commercial health insurance may be able to use direct billing, if their insurer has an arrangement with the medical institution.

What this page did not establish

  • Individual hospitals' levels, ownership and bed numbers were not collected, so the lists above do not tell you how any named institution is classified.
  • The bulletin's own table of hospital types was not read; only its text was used.
  • The statistical bulletin and the English portal come from different pages and may use different definitions, so the counts and the portal's list should not be matched to one another.
  • Whether a booking channel currently accepts an appointment was not tested.
